Event #2: Gattaca

The second event I attended was watching Gattaca. This event occurred via zoom on May 7. Being present on the zoom call hosted by Jessica, we were sent a link to watch the movie. This movie was heavily based on an alternate timeline where genetic modification is heavily used. In a world where genetic modification defines your social status, people born naturally have lower-paying jobs.

(the scenes from the movie are sadly blacked out by Vimeo app)

The plot of the movie mainly involves impersonation and investigation. The protagonist is a natural-born person who utilizes the DNA of a valid person, is capable of finding a higher paying job at a corporation. When realizing the movie takes place in a civilization where some people can be hindered made me feel bad for them. The reasoning is because they can do nothing about their genetics and at the end, it was their parents that decided the ultimate choice. As the movie progresses, we discover several suspenseful moments and moments that shocked me. The fact a person can not be able to live their dreams is very tragic.

As the protagonist is under a new identity, someone from the Gattaca corporation is murdered. As many viewers know, this can bring the discovery that the protagonist is nonvalid. The investigation is based upon the eyelash police found near the murder scene. The eyelash belongs to the protagonist's actual identity. It was a plot twist when it was discovered his younger brother was responsible for the stoppage of the investigation. The near ending also had its plot twist, which is one of my favorite scenes. As the protagonist is about to realize his dreams of space travel, he needs to do one last test. Unfortunately, he does not have enough samples from Jerome. The doctor conducting the test revealed that he knows that the protagonist is faking his identity, but ultimately he does not intervene in stopping the protagonist. Overall, I enjoyed the movie and the suspense that it introduced in many of its scenes.
