Weekly Blog 3: Robotics

Robotics has had a great deal with art. One main observation I learned is that art determines the perception people have of robots. There are individuals who believe that robots are beneficial for a more effective lifestyle and can help can accomplish many goals that can be challenging for humans. An example of this is based on the lecture video, where Professor Machiko Kusahara discusses how robots can be used for emergencies. Robots can be used to save people in fires as a specific example. People can have a negative perception of robots, mainly like in western society. These perceptions come based on ways robots can negatively impact lifestyle and even safety. One example is how robots are going to become intelligent enough to fight against humanity. This perception is widely seen in many sci-fi movies. One western movie that goes over this view is "I Robot." This movie goes over how advanced robots can be mass-produced. However, the movie mainly focuses on how robots, in the future, can be capable of having emotions and can become rogue. The main point to note is that these are assumptions on how robots will behave in the future.

Art can have also had a positive impact on how people perceive robots. In Japan, for example, they have a positive view of robots. It has to do with media, such as past comics "Astro Boy", but also the way Japanese perceive robots as friendly. Robots can have a friendly design and face to not scare off others.

Also, following up from the first paragraph, a friendly design can be necessary to not scare people even in the most needed times. A robot that has to save individuals trapped in a fire has to demonstrate a will to help, not to harm. Another positive view is how robots can be used to help the disabled. Art is necessary to create great designs that match human anatomy. The overall construction of robotic parts that can help paralyzed people brings hope that living a normal life is possible.
